Harold and Inge Marcus Department of

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The first Industrial Engineering department in the world

Facilities

One of the strengths of the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering program at Penn State is our unbeatable student laboratory facilities. In fact, Penn State's IME department, located in Leonhard Building, has more laboratory space dedicated to student instruction and research than any other IE program in the U.S. Penn State IE student have hands-on access to leading-edge equipment and software not available in other programs. As part of their course work, they could find themselves:

  • Measuring human respiration and heart rate as work progresses
  • Pouring molten aluminum
  • Machining hardened steel
  • Developing and manufacturing a product—starting with computer-aided design
  • Programming a robot
  • Writing computer programs for analysis, data collection, and control of manufacturing system
